Ems watched the humans pass by, minding their own business without a care in the world. Analyzed their movements, how they spoke, their language, how pronunciations changed with accents. It interested her how they were so ignorant of the wonders of life around them, the technology they had created, the way in which they moved their mouths to speak. The younger humans were the most interesting, so full of themselves. As though the world was nothing to be afraid of, just like the friendly man who hung around in alleyways. They never stopped talking to him. She saw some form of trading of goods between generations, a fine white powder in a bag. They coveted something so infinitesimal, like it was the difference between living and being killed.
Even though she didn't speak a word of English, or indeed understand any of the language, she understood more than most. Every calculation, every thought, every motion, revealed more to her than a thousand words. "Haylo... Hailo... Hello... Hello, hello, hello.", she smiled. Time to blend in.
Ems jumped down into the alley behind the building she had been using as a vantage point. Revealing herself from the invisible state she had been in formerly. She quickly checked to see if there was some sort of door nearby, which she could have possibly come from. Nothing worse than a full blown inquiry on where she came from all of a sudden when she could barely speak past the familiar greeting used by most humans.

"Ems." The whisper seemed to come from nowhere. The alley was empty. "Ems...watching, watching, always watching aren't we?" murmured the voice. "You and I such opposites, no no, although yes." A cold chuckle. "Not for long." That was when she was hit from behind and knocked out cold.

Ems growled viciously as she came to. Rubbing the back of her head in annoyance, "Valkain poojo. Gir atri megrath, jen ritren tinreackh!", she cracked her neck. The back of her hand hurt, a small drip of blood sitting on the flesh. She closed her eyes for a moment, replaying the message of what she was to find out on the surface world. Her mission. "Ikraln.", she slipped her hand into her pocket and pulled out a collar. She slipped round her neck, leaving a bit of slack. It's change was instant, from leather to metal, collar to necklace. "Time to work then Ems...", she smirked. It would be easier to communicate now. Though her accent was still prominent.

In the street she was approached by a tall woman. She was wearing a hood so that her face was concealed. "That's a beautiful necklace you're wearing," she drawled in a Vegas accent. "Might I ask where it came from? It's very unusual?" The young woman adjusted her dark glasses and waited.

Ems narrowed her eyes ever so slightly, "It belonged to my mother.", she looked the tall woman over. Her accent wasn't like those she had studied on arrival. It was foreign, like Ems own accent. She would need to tread carefully, especially since this one had noticed the one thing that mattered more than it should. Her necklace. Charmed by an ancient magic so she didn't have to learn the human language. Ems put a protective hand over the cold metal, "It is very precious.", she waited a moment before allowing herself to ask a question, "Who are you?"

The stranger smiled lazily. "Just a tourist honey." She paused before continuing. "My father...he was a jeweller. Taught me a lot about necklaces. It's such an unusual piece, I couldn't help noticing," she drawled. Then she extended her right hand. "Rebecca Smith."

"I have the strange feeling that your name isn't really Rebecca Smith...", Ems tilted her head to the side slightly, "I really don't have time for formalities, however. I must be going. Things to do, people to... see.", Ems shook the hand anyway. A common gesture she had noticed many humans use so far. Her observations had done well so far, but she couldn't stray for long over them. "Goodbye.", there was a sudden updraft of wind which blew stray bits of newspaper around the alleyway. Ems had seemed to vanish.
"Nice rooftops up here...", she noted to herself quietly as she stepped gingerly on the red tiles which singled out the bank amongst the various other buildings in the area. Ems fingered the charm of her necklace softly. It was one of the few possessions she was proud of these days. The day was drawing to a close. "How observant these humans are... Not once have they looked up.", she sighed. It was strangely annoying for people to be such idiots. Attacks from the sky were more common than anything.

(A/N: How observant they are? Is that sarcasm or a typing mistake?)

"What do you mean, you don't have it?" She bowed low, remorse etched on her face. "Gomen Nasai, mi sensei," she murmured. "It must be had," reiterated the sensei. "Bring the creature, if you must. It must be kept to bushido." "But sensei, my mission," murmured the warrior. She recieved a blow on the head for her troubles and the figures swept from the room.
Damn...

Ems jumped down behind an obvious member of the peacekeeping forces which patrolled the city. She tapped on his shoulder, "Excuse me sir.", oh how she loved that magic, "But it seems that the people are nowhere near as observant of danger as they should be.", the officer turned around to address her. He seemed to have great difficulty with this, as Ems was nowhere to be seen. He turned back around and almost fell over screaming. Ems scratched the back of her head, "Just like that... Oh well.", she shrugged, "Seems normal for around here...", she vanished.
The cold of night crept into town. Sending young children to bed and older men into the local tavern for some relaxation away from their families. Possibly avoiding the tedious task of reading to their children or not drinking in the house as it was a 'bad example for the children' to see their father rolling around on the floor chanting "Oh the blue bells of the hills for meee pretty dah'ling!" all night. Whichever it was, Ems was beginning to want a drink. She wandered from the alleyway silently and slipped in before the door closed.

"Here," drawled an American woman, passing her a glass filled with bright green liquid. "On the house. Come on, drink up. My own little secret." And suddenly the vision flickered and she seemed to be a hooded figure, dressed in black. Then before anyone could react, things were back to normal...

"No thank you. I've learned such a lesson in life.", Ems turned around. There was a sudden flash and everyone fell silent, still, "Especially the lesson of not being able to trust anybody.", she turned back around, a few dry snores escaping from the more drunk customers, "What do you want from me enough to hide your identity? For humans know barely anything and mean nothing to me. Lessons hard learned in life, such a cruel teacher. For the test comes first, the lesson afterwards.", she smashed the glass half-heartedly, "I REALLY don't trust liquids which are funny colours and free."

(A/N: any objections to their being in England?)
"Excuse me? Excuse me, miss?" Ems was being tapped on the shoulder. "Maybe you've had enough, eh?" asked the Englishman, steering her gently towards a seat. He sat her down and then went to the bar and grabbed a bottle of water. "Never seen a drunk talk to a WALL before," he chuckled softly to the bartender before rejoing Ems.
